HTC‘s Emerging Technology Council hosted a two-hour event at the Hyatt Regency on Louisiana. It brought together representatives from the University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business, the Greater Houston Partnership, the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and other groups. UH Small Business Development Center’s James Evans says it’s for emerging high-tech companies to network with other companies in the same field, and to meet representatives of resources that can help grow their business.
“You could see a number of technology companies — young, starting up. They’re either in the energy field, information technology, life sciences, aerospace — looking for someone to assist them, depending on where they are in their development. Once a company gets to be, let’s just say, three years old, they’re no longer a start-up and they’re more of an established company. They’ve gone through that first round of financing and so they want to be introduced to another angel group or another venture capitalist group.”
Evans made a presentation about the UH Small Business Development Center.
“We normally get involved in the early phase, or the first phase early stage, helping them to do the research or the feasibility study. From that, we’ll help them develop the business plan and put together the financial projections. If it’s a debt financing, then we can help them with that. If it’s an equity financing, which would involve angels and/or venture capitalists, then we introduce them to Houston Technology Center.”
