A Houston Matters Field Trip to the Montrose Neighborhood

Many Houston area neighborhoods have developed their own special identity – through the people that live there, the businesses that flourish there, the cultural events presented there. One neighborhood seemingly awash in ‘personality’ is the Montrose neighborhood in the city of Houston. But neighborhoods change over time, and so that personality may not be what it was ten years ago, or what it will be ten years from now. We’ll learn a little more about Montrose, and explore how, if at all, the personality of the neighborhood has changed in recent years, or might change in the years to come. Houston Matters took a field trip to find out.

Edel HowlinEdel is a producer on Houston Matters and reporter for PBS’s Newshour Weekend. At Houston Public Media, Edel started as a reporter covering veteran issues and the quirkier side of life in Houston. Before her time in public radio she worked for local commercial station Cox as an on air personality, whilst volunteering at KPFT. In 2013, Edel received awards for her stories from the Houston Press Club, the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Association and the Texas Veteran's Commission. Before radio, Edel earned a degree in statistics at University College Dublin, Ireland. Quickly realizing that statistics may not be the path for her, she switched gears and went back to study TV and broadcast journalism. Since 2005, she has worked for both local and national stations in Dublin, wearing many hats from news anchor to producer, and reporter. Edel was born and raised in Clane, Co. Kildare, Ireland.
