Houston Matters for Friday, May 3, 2013

The National Rifle Association’s annual convention is under way here in Houston. Some 70,000 are expected to attend.

After Newtown, some believed the country might be ready for a new conversation about guns. Instead, gun control and gun rights advocates seem more entrenched than ever.

Today on Houston Matters, the gun debate and Houstonians’ thoughts about guns – we’ll explore what motivates some of us to own guns, and others to actively choose not to. We’ll hear from the Houston chapter of Moms Demand Action, an organization pushing for what they call “common sense gun laws.” And we’ll hear from NRA President David Keene.

Also: to buy, or not to buy? That is the question Houstonians face as they contemplate whether to rent or own a home. We’ll learn more about Houston’s real estate market, and we welcome your questions for a mortgage lender, an apartment manager, and a realtor.

Plus, the Off-Shore Technology Conference takes place in Houston next week. We’ll learn more about it, and discuss what, if any, lessons the oil industry has learned since the Deep Water Horizon disaster in 2010.
