Houston Matters for Mon., Nov. 18, 2013

Earlier this year, Forbes published its list of the 25 best places to retire – 25 U.S. cities that retirees might want to consider, based on factors ranging from cost of living to taxes to medical care, crime, weather and volunteer opportunities. And while three Texas cities made the cut – Austin, College Station and San Antonio – Houston did not. Some factors are in Houston’s favor when it comes to retirement, such as the city’s great medical care. But for retirees, other areas fall short, including our congested roadways.

On this edition of Houston Matters, we talk with a local AARP representative, a benefits counselor with the Harris County Area Agency on Aging and the managing editor of the Houston-based magazine Where To Retire about Houston’s appeal – or lack thereof – when it comes to retirement.

Also this hour: we talk with Omar Afra the publisher of Free Press Houston, about proposed plans to expand Free Press Summerfest.

And: we review another busy weekend in Houston sports with CultureMap Houston columnist MK Bower.
